Explain Pain provides simple, powerful education to help people understand why they hurt and what they can do about it, using the latest science. It empowers individuals by reducing fear and unhelpful beliefs, enhancing outcomes when combined with active treatment. The approach applies across ages and conditions, from general aches to complex pain syndromes, and has no side effects.
Graded Motor Imagery (GMI) is a brain training program that targets the nervous system using tools like imagery, mirrors, and movement, offering new hope for those with chronic pain and central sensitisation.
By the end of this course participants will have:
- Understand key pain physiology, including peripheral and central processes, and the underpinning neuro-endocrine-immune mechanisms.
- Describe how beliefs, emotions, and context influence the lived experience of pain and its interpretation.
- Evaluate different conceptual models of pain and select target concepts that support personalised education and recovery.
- Analyse personal and patient beliefs using biopsychosocial reasoning tools to identify opportunities for reconceptualisation and reinforcement.
- Develop person-centred strategies to facilitate healthy sense-making using metaphors, narratives, and experiential tools tailored to individual needs.
- Understand the process of GMI and where it fits into an overall treatment programme
- Be able to identify appropriate patients for GMI from both clinical presentations and research outcomes
- Have knowledge of the scientific underpinnings of GMI
- Have practical skills in using the three components of GMI
- Be able to confidently translate learnt GMI skills to effective treatment applications
